Sony releases SSD laptop with 11.5hr life

SOLID STATE DRIVES (SSDs) will probably be the main selling point for top end notebooks this autumn, and Sony will join the battle with the release of the TZ18GN, the first Vaio computer with one inside.

The capacity isn't exactly earth shattering. Sony opted for a 32GB capacity. The price difference between this 32GB one and TZ17GN (100GB drive) is a massive $700. So, for $4,300 you get 68GB less capacity and half an hour more battery life.

Appearance is so sleek that even Apple fanbois might get jealous

My own notebook cost over $4,000 16 months ago, and nothing has changed when it comes to asking price for a notebook with solid-state drive. Somehow we wish that these $650 drives from Sandisk came into production earlier, and that the difference between SSD and regular ones was around $500.

This laptop is based on a very small frame - the 11.1-inch LCD screen is stretched from one end to another, since overall dimensions are just 22.7 x 2.25 x 19.8 cm. It weighs 1.2 kilograms, and claims a battery life of 11.5 hours.
