Microsoft Reveals Windows

In response to customer demands Microsoft announced that instead of patching bugs and improving features of Windows Vista in the next service pack release, they would just install XP.

"We're focused on giving the customer what they want, and want they want is to just go back to XP," said Microsoft Development Chief Greg Elston.

Elston said not only will the move improve customer satisfaction with Vista, but will allow the company to focus resources on the next operating system instead of the flailing Vista. "We can move people off of Vista development now, and move them to Windows 7 development," said Elston. "That should allow us to only delay Windows 7 by thirteen months past its scheduled date instead of the planned eighteen."

Customers have had many complaints about Vista, so it wasn't surprising the response to the move was mostly positive. "Ever since I install Vista I've wanted to go back to XP," so microsoft is providing a patch to degrade vista to XP....

Students at a school in Nigeria

Computer enthusiasts in the developed world will soon be able to get their hands on the so-called "$100 laptop".

The organisation behind the project has launched the "give one, get one" scheme that will allow US residents to purchase two laptops for $399 (£198).

One laptop will be sent to the buyer whilst a child in the developing world will receive the second machine

The G1G1 scheme, as it is known, will offer the laptops for just two weeks, starting on the 12 November.

The offer to the general public comes after the project's founder admitted that concrete orders from the governments of developing nations had not always followed verbal agreements

Nicholas Negroponte told the New York Times: "I have to some degree underestimated the difference between shaking the hand of a head of state and having a cheque written.

"And yes, it has been a disappointment."

Walter Bender, head of software development at One Laptop per Child (OLPC), told the BBC News website: "From day one there's been a lot of interest expressed in having some way of people in the developed world participate in the programme."

Price hike

The XO laptop has been developed to be used by children and is as low cost, durable and simple to use as possible.

It packs several innovations including a sunlight readable display so that it can be used outside. It has no moving parts, can be powered by solar, foot-pump or pull-string powered chargers and is housed in a waterproof case.

cost breakdown

The machine's price has recently increased from $176 (£88) to $188 (£93) although the eventual aim is to sell the machines for $100 (£50).

Governments can buy the green and white machines in lots of 250,000.

In July, hardware suppliers were given the green light to ramp-up production of all of the components needed to build the low-cost machines.

The decision suggested that the organisation had met or surpassed the three million orders it need to make production viable.

The names of the governments that have purchased the first lots of machines have not been released.

Developing whirl

But, according to OLPC, there has also been huge interest in the XO laptop from individuals in the developed world.

"I don't know how many times people have added an entry in our wiki saying 'how do I get one?' or 'I'd gladly pay one for a child if I could get one'," said Mr Bender.

Schoolchildren with $100 laptop, AP
The laptop was designed to be used in developing countries
The organisation has previously hinted that they were considering selling the laptop on a give one get one basis, but not this early.

In January this year, Michalis Bletsas, chief connectivity officer for the project, told the BBC news website that OLPC was hoping to sell the laptop to the public "next year".

Nicholas Negroponte, the founder of OLPC, has also previously said: "Many commercial schemes have been considered and proposed that may surface in 2008 or beyond, one of which is 'buy 2 and get 1'."

According to Mr Bender, OLPC see several advantages to offering laptops to the developed world.

"There's going to be a lot more people able to contribute content, software development and support," said Mr Bender.

But primarily, he said, it was a way of extending the laptop project to countries that cannot afford to participate.

"We see it as a way of kick-starting the programme in the least developed countries."

Early adopter

The first countries to receive the donated laptops will be Cambodia, Afghanistan, Rwanda and Haiti.

Other least developed countries (LDC), as defined by the UN, will be able to bid to join the scheme.

The laptops will go on sale for two weeks through the xogiving.org website.

They will only be available for two weeks to ensure OLPC can meet demand and so that machines are not diverted away from countries that have already placed orders.

Although the exact number of laptops available through the G1G1 scheme has not been revealed, Mr Bender said that the "first 25,000" people that purchase one should receive it before the end of the year.

Others will receive their machines in the first quarter of 2008.

Mr Bender said that if it proves successful, the organisation would consider extending the scheme.

"Our motivation is helping kids learn and giving them an opportunity to participate in the laptop programme so whatever will advance that cause we will do," he said.

"This is something we are going to try and if it looks like it is an effective tool we will do more of it."

Unlocked iphones make to indian market

Unlocked iPhones have already made its way into Indian market through online shopping portals such as Reddif and Indiatimes Shopping. An 8GB unlocked iPhone goes for a whooping price of 35,000 Indian Rupees, which comes to around $879. Resellers claim that they purchase iPhones off eBay and then get it shipped to India, where it is unlocked and sold for a heavy price.

Unlocked iPhone in India

According to resellers, these phones have been upgraded to the latest firmware (version 1.02), before being software unlocked. Estimated delivery time is 7 to 10 days, and the phone works with all available networks in India.

Visual Voicemail feature doesn’t work in the unlocked version of iPhone (it’s is a network dependent feature). Another drawback, naturally, is that upgrading the firmware in future might lock the phone again.

The actual price of the iPhone is $399, which means you’ll have to pay almost twice the amount to get it here in India. Not a bad deal for those who want to be the first ones to carry the JesusPhone in their pockets? So, will you wait until next year for the iPhone to become officially available in Asia, or will you buy it now?

Google vs Stumble Upon

I am a regular stumbler. That my favorite way to waste ma time on the net. searching for new sites exploring it..

Few days back my friends asked me for a list of proxy sites to use in his office. as most sites were blocked in his office. As usual started the googling. I used the keyword "Proxy" and started my search , this gave me just 2 link for proxy in the first page, rest were sm details linking to wikipedia about what is proxy. when my friend tried these proxies all were blocked in his ofice. So i started changing the keyword to all possible combination i could think of and search , No hits :( . Google would throw up some definition or some details regarding the keyword i used else the link i obtain from google will be blocked. Then i knew that all popular proxy sites are blocked in my friends office. and google searches the pages based on popularity.

So i moved to Stumble Upon now.Gave the Search Keyword as "Proxy" and started stumbling..
amazing all the site tat opened were a proxy site, no refrence to site stating the meaning of proxy . So started making a list of sites and gave it to my friend to check on it. Got a 30% success . 30% of the site were wrking in his ofice compared to 0% from googling.

Now stopped using google for searching. Stumbling provides me with better results, coz its humans who is building this search database. its far more accurate than Bots...

9 WordPress Alternatives

Drupal - Drupal is a little more of a WordPress on steroids. Lots of goodies and better membership system in place too.

AJAXPress - A little buggy by looking at the demo but will become a better idea once it has had more time to get polished.

Textpattern - Flexable and open source blogging solution - much of the same WordPress look and feel.

Serendipity - This is a PHP-powered weblog application which gives the user an easy way to maintain a weblog or even a complete homepage.

Joomla - Like Drupal, might be too feature rich for the casual blogging fan - but a good engine for in depth web sites or basic blogs.

b2evolution - An old one, but still a good one - and can hold it’s own weight still with the other selections out there.

Simplog - Simple, yet powerful - the name says it all here. You want basics without the fluff - go with Simplog.

Wikiblog - This one tries to mix the blogging and wiki sides of things into an interesting mashup of content creation.

Sblog - Another one similar to WordPress, looks like it is playing catchup too. Once it gets there though, might be worthy competition.

Ironkey

Thumb drives are a convenient and cool way to carry around your data, and with drive sizes in the gigabytes, you can store a ton of photos, files, music, and video in a very tiny space. Unfortunately, due to their small sizes, they are targets for information thieves.

Think about it - all that personal data - your resume, email, password-files, and pictures of your girlfriend (wink) can be picked up and copied and returned before you even noticed it was missing. You want to have this data handy, but handy for you and not for that scumbag down the hall with the sticky fingers.

Like you, the US Military wanted portable but secure storage, and the guys at IronKey stepped up. They've developed the perfect solution that's one-part thumb-drive, and two parts Mission: Impossible. Their thumb drives hold up to 4 Gigabytes of data, but includes a hardware encryption chip that scrambles the data so as to be completely unreadable without a password.

Passwords can be hacked, but not the IronKey. It's built to withstand attacks both virtual and physical. 10 incorrect password attempts, and the encryption chip self-destructs, making the contents of the flash drive totally unreadable. The contents of the drive are filled with epoxy, so if a hacker tries to physically access the chips, he'd more likely damage them instead. Even if he did get access to the memory chips, they'd be worthless without the encryption chip. Electron-shielded, even a scanning electron microscope can't get inside.

Applications built right onto the IronKey help keep your personal data safe. For example, the password manager keeps your passwords safe. How? Your passwords are securely stored in a hidden hardware-encrypted area inside the device (and not in the drive's file system), being first locally encrypted with 256-bit AES, using randomly generated keys encrypted with a SHA-256 hash of your device password. All of this data is then doubly encrypted with 128-bit AES hardware encryption. Hack that.

A secure copy of Firefox included with your IronKey encrypts your browsing session through a VPN tunnel to IronKey's Secure Sessions Service. It works by tunneling your entire web browsing communications through the Tor-based Secure Sessions proxy on your IronKey. The Secure Sessions tunnel connects over an encrypted connection to their network routing servers, which in turn route your traffic between a number of servers, and then eventually out to your destination website. This approach protects your identity and your confidentiality, encrypting and anonymizing your Web surfing on almost any network or VPN (virtual private network).

These drives have already seen duty in Afghanistan, keeping US Military secrets safe from unsavory people. They're certainly good enough even for your most sensitive data.

The eight secrets that make Apple No 1

Secret 1: Engineering supports design -- no exceptions

Most companies bring designers in late in the product development process to create an experience "wrapper" around all the features and technologies the engineers and marketing people created.

At Apple, designers rule. Apple's brilliant designers figure out in detail how the product will look, feel and work, and then the engineers are tasked to make it happen.

Years ago, Jeff Hawkins changed the world by creating the Palm Pilot. He designed it by walking around with a Palm Pilot-size block of wood, pretending to use the device. He took notes about what he wanted to do with the device and how he wanted to use it. He refused to be influenced by existing organizers.

By the time he gave the engineers their marching orders, the Palm Pilot was conceptually complete. He got massive push-back on it from his engineering team -- "If we add six more buttons, we can make it faster..." -- but the original conception prevailed, and an awesome product was born.

Palm seems to have lost this visionary approach to product design and is paying the price in the marketplace. Apple still has it.

Secret 2: Fewer is better

Far too many companies give too much power to market analysts as a substitute for product vision. One result is product oversegmentation that reflects the finely tailored targeting of a product to a specific market segment.

Sony, for example, just unveiled four new Blu-ray HDD recorders -- four! -- each with minor, largely irrelevant differences. The company obviously thinks consumers will dedicate an hour of their time just to consider Sony's various Blu-ray options. In reality, eyes will glaze, and people will wander away, confused. Imagine if Sony poured all its energy into just one Blue-ray HDD recorder. You'd probably want it.

That's what Apple does. It tries to develop the fewest possible number of products, each with the broadest possible appeal. Yes, there are multiple iPods, but feature overlap is close to zero, and it's super easy to learn which product does what.

Look at the iPhone. Or OS X. Or any other product area. The experience of going into an Apple store provides a relief from product variation overload. You can pretty much try every product in the store in 30 minutes, not including content and accessories.

Microsoft should have learned this secret in January. Vista came in so many versions that online experts had to publish tables to explain what was for sale. Consumers still have no clue about the differences between the various versions. Buying Vista isn't a thrill. It's a homework assignment.

Let me make this extremely clear for all you companies out there that still don't get it: All these subtle product variations create anxiety. And anxiety makes people not want your product. Fewer is better.

Secret 3: The experience is the product

Everyone knows this secret, but few actually employ it. But Apple is dead serious about this secret, even to the point of offering US$35,000 to the city of Montreal to remove three parking meters in front of the Apple store there. The city refused, but this is how seriously Apple takes the Apple "experience."

Another example is Apple's packaging. The company's products come in beautifully designed packaging with obviously expensive packaging materials and manuals. Compare that with Apple's competitors, which see packaging as a place to save money or as an afterthought that doesn't matter.

Why raise the price a few dollars and sell something in a better box? Because the box is part of the experience, and the experience is the product.

Secret 4: The product is the product

The bigger companies get, the less energy they seem to spend on creating great products. Instead, whenever the CEOs of most computer and consumer electronics companies speak in public, they blather on about alliances, services, improvements in the sales channel and other things buyers don't care about. Apple CEO Steve Jobs talks about the actual products above all.

One of the weird things about buying a cell phone is carriers are clearly more interested in selling you plans, options and reliability. The physical handsets seem to be an afterthought. But consumers are crying out for better handsets, and the carriers don't seem to notice. Apple does notice.

Secret 5: You can't please everyone, so please people with good taste

Every major company performs many kinds of market research to find out who the buyers are and what they want. But one problem with market research is that people are inaccurate sources of information about their own buying behavior. And that is often reflected in the products these companies offer.

Say you offer survey respondents a choice between Product A and Product B. Both have identical functionality, but Product A looks a lot better and costs more. People are likely to tell you they would choose A, but they'll buy B.

What you do learn from market research is what you already know: People vary. You can go after the high end of the market, the midrange or the low end.

Targeting the low end cheapens the brand. Going after the "average" consumer shrinks margins. Only the high end creates the pixie-dust intangible quality of buzz, brand affinity and, ultimately, brand loyalty, which can be converted into higher margins and higher sales.

Secret 6: Leave the past behind

Some analysts slam Apple and praise Microsoft for, respectively, abandoning or supporting legacy versions of their operating systems and other products. All things being equal, it's better for users to be able to run all their old stuff on new systems.

However, all things are not equal. Legacy support comes at a great cost to the company, which is eventually paid for by the customer.

I think one of the reasons Vista is such a mess is that it tries to sell the same OS to businesses as it does to consumers. Legacy support is absolutely essential in enterprises. However, with Windows, consumers are burdened with all that legacy support code, but they don't have IT departments to sort it all out.

If Microsoft created a consumer OS as a blank-slate exercise, starting from scratch and refusing to support anything older than Windows XP, it might be able to offer a faster, easier-to-use and more stable environment.

It's a tough decision. But in the consumer electronics marketplace, it's better to drop legacy support if it's slowing the pace of innovation or degrading product quality.

Secret 7: Product names are important. Really important

One of Apple's few competitors in the cell phone handset market is the LG KU990 Viewty.

Wait, what?

What sounds better: The "iPhone" or the "KU990 Viewty." Which is easier to remember? So many products are so badly named, and for such bad reasons. Companies should agonize over product names and ban ugly non-word strings of letters and numbers designed to make it easy to categorize products internally. It's the easiest and cheapest way to improve brand appeal and loyalty. Why do so many companies fail to do it?

Secret 8: Group affiliation is the driver

And now we get to the mother of all Apple secrets, the secret that explains why people buy its products.

If you monitor (or participate in) the ongoing religious wars between Apple fans and Apple critics, you'll notice a curious phenomenon: Apple fans are the most rabidly active, fiercely loyal group in the industry. Why do Apple fans spend so much time and energy fighting for the honor and glory of a consumer electronics company?

The answer is that identity is a primary human motivation. One of the major components of self-identity is group affiliation. People want to belong to a group that immediately identifies them as being superior to other people in other groups. That's just how human beings are wired. It's the same aspect of human nature that drives all fandom as well as nationalism and religious zealotry.

Buying a laptop, media player or cell phone is more like buying clothes or a car than buying a dishwasher or a vacuum cleaner. It's less about functionality and more about what it tells other people about who you are and what group you belong to.

This is what's so great about Apple: Its products get a "B" on features and functionality -- they're almost best in class in most of their respective categories. But they're an "A+" on what really matters -- coolness, which translates into both boosted self-identity and appealing group affiliation.

I'll get slammed on this last point by readers who hold features and functionality above self-identity. And I'll also get slammed by Apple fans who believe their product choices are driven by more substantive concerns than boosting their self-image.

But Apple executives will read this rule and say, "Well, yeah. Obviously." That's why their "Choose a Mac" ads are so effective. They're fun and highlight actual product differences between PCs running Windows and Macs. But they also clearly emphasize the idea that PC and Mac users are different kinds of people. Your choice is really about what kind of person you want to be or which group you want to belong to.

Most surviving consumer electronics companies know and use at least one of these secrets. But Apple is the only major company I can think of that employs all of them. And that's why Apple is No. 1.

25th anniversary of 'smiley face' emoticon

Twenty-five years ago, three keystrokes - a colon followed by a hyphen and a parenthesis - were first used as a horizontal "smiley face" in a computer message by Carnegie Mellon University professor Scott E. Fahlman, the university said.

To mark the anniversary Wednesday, Fahlman and his colleagues are starting an annual student contest for innovation in technology-assisted, person-to-person communication. The Smiley Award, sponsored by Yahoo Inc., carries a $500 cash prize.

Language experts say the smiley face and other so-called emoticons, or emotional icons, have given people a concise way of expressing sentiments in e-mail and other electronic messages that otherwise would be difficult to detect.

Fahlman posted the emoticon in a message to an online electronic bulletin board at 11:44 a.m. on Sept. 19, 1982, during a discussion about the limits of online humor and how to denote comments meant to be taken lightly.

"I propose the following character sequence for joke markers: :-)," wrote Fahlman. "Read it sideways."

The suggestion gave computer users a way to convey humor or positive feelings with a smile - or the opposite sentiments by reversing the parenthesis to form a frown.

Carnegie Mellon said the smileys spread from its campus to other universities, businesses and eventually around the world as the Internet gained popularity. Variations, such as the "wink" that uses a semicolon, emerged later.

"It has been fascinating to watch this phenomenon grow from a little message I tossed off in 10 minutes to something that has spread all around the world," Fahlman was quoted as saying in a university statement. "I sometimes wonder how many millions of people have typed these characters, and how many have turned their heads to one side to view a smiley, in the 25 years since this all started."

Amy Weinberg, a University of Maryland linguist and computer scientist, said emoticons such as the smiley were "definitely creeping into the way, both in business and academia, people communicate."

"In terms of things that language processing does, you have to take them into account," she said. "If you're doing almost anything ... and you have a sentence that says 'I love my boss' and then there's a smiley face, you better not take that seriously."

Such emoticons reflect the likely original purpose of language - to enable people to express emotion, said Clifford Nass, a professor of communications at Stanford University.

The emotion behind a written sentence may be hard to discern because it is often conveyed through tone of voice, he said.

"What emoticons do is essentially provide a mechanism to transmit emotion when you don't have the voice," Nass said.

In some ways, he added, they also give people "the ability not to think as hard about the words they're using."

Ryan Stansifer, a computer science professor at the Florida Institute of Technology, said the emoticon was part of a natural progression in communication.

"I don't think the smiley face was the beginning and the end," he said. "All people at all times take advantage of whatever means of communication they have."

He said people today can hardly imagine using computer chat programs that don't translate keystrokes into colorful graphics.

"Now we have so much power, we don't settle for a colon-dash-paren," Stansifer said. "You want the smiley face, so all these chatting softwares have to have them."

The smiley face has become more than just an indicator of humor or happiness. Instant messaging programs often contain an array of faces intended to express emotions ranging from surprise to affection to embarrassment.

Carnegie Mellon says Fahlman is the originator of the smiley face emoticon, though computer science and linguistics professors contacted by The Associated Press said they were unaware of who created the symbol.
