Sites that make Firefox sad.

The following is a list of sites that actively block browsers other than Internet Explorer or have some serious problem that prevents the site from being usable in Firefox.

Actively block Firefox:

http://www.movielink.com/ "To enjoy the Movielink service you must use Internet Explorer 5.0 or higher" (also requires Win2000 or XP) No chance of enjoyment there!
http://www.saturnconnect.com/ (Just outright says it wants you to use IE. BTW IE is NOT free, you pay for it with Windows!)
http://www.walmart.com/swap/SwapEntry.do?dslURL=/swap/LoadMain.do&closeWindow=false&isBuyCD=false (walmart music downloads) " We notice you're not using Internet Explorer...." Yea dumbasses, there is a reason for that.
https://www.walmartbenefits.com/MyBenefitsRegistrationWeb/mybenefits.jsp (Ohhh, we think you should use IE.... does let you continue and mostly works. Walmart is now owned by Microsoft I guess.)
http://www.connect-europe.com "We have performed a system check and detected that you need to download and install [...] Microsoft® Internet Explorer 5.5+" Funny, it even says that on my Mac. I don't think they checked hard enough.
http://www.connect.com To get these guyses music you have to use the obsolete IE 6 browser and your choice of the lovely Microsoft brand Windows 2000 or Microsoft brand Windows XP. And holy camel poo they let you use the wonderful Microsoft Windows ME also!
http://play.toontown.com/ This is just sad, especially because is it is mostly just flash anyway!
https://www.sedona.bz/To access SEDONA, you must use Internet Explorer!
http://www.howdidido.co.uk/ (I think there is some evil coding in this site)
http://www.hubbellcatalog.com/ "You must use Internet Explorer to view this site", excuse me assholes, but I don't have to view your site at all.
http://nom.mlxchange.com/ Specifically designed for IE because they must love bill...
http://www.mlxchange.com/ Same thing I guess.

All it takes is one page that doesn't work right in anything but IE to make a person switch back to IE. It is almost too bad Mozilla folks won't stoup down to the same level.

Mozilla is working on Mobile Firefox

After making a revolution in desktop web browser market, Mozilla have now announced their plans to step into the mobile space with a new version of Firefox for mobile devices. They’ve already hired two high-profile mobile developers for this project. And the first, basic release is expected to come as early as 2008.

For Mozilla, this isn’t the first venture into the mobile browser space. They have already released a mobile browser called Minimo. Unlike most other mobile browsers, Minimo offers full AJAX supports, RSS feeds, addons and is probably the only tabbed browsing solution for Pocket PC. Mozilla has also developed a mobile browser for Nokia’s N800/N770 mobile internet device.

The sweetest part of Mobile Firefox would be its support for extension. Third party services and other additional features can be easily integrated with ease. Think of it something like using Greasemonkey or Adblock Plus on your mobile phone.

Full browsing experience is the greatest demand in the mobile community. One factor, which probably made Apple’s iPhone a huge hit, was the fullscreen browsing support. Web pages on iPhone are rendered, as they appear on your computer, but the same feature isn’t available on other mobile devices. So, if Mozilla’s upcoming mobile browser will be able to put the same functionality on other high-end devices like N95, it could quickly become a huge hit as well.

It is unclear whether Mozilla picks Windows Mobile or Symbian as their target platform. Currently, the Symbian browser market is largely monopolized by Opera and Opera mini.

Four Hundred Million Firefox Downloads

On November 9th, 2004, we all started a movement. Spread Firefox, supported by tens of thousands of contributors, took just 99 days to deliver 25 million downloads of Firefox to a world of people desperate for a better Web -- a Web that didn't overwhelm them with pop-ups, a Web that didn't infect their systems with viruses and spyware, a Web that was fun again, simply put, a Web that worked.

In less than six months, you all doubled that number to 50 million downloads, turned open source into a household word and reasserted the supremacy of choice and simplicity.

It took the Spread Firefox global community of activists only one year to reach the 100 million downloads mark and to let the world know that innovation was alive again on the Web.

And just one year ago you all helped to double that number again, to 200 million downloads. More than 50,000 of you, with Spread Firefox buttons and banners, not only helped Firefox achieve an amazing download milestone, but you all helped to make Firefox one of the world's most recognized and respected brands.

Today, you all have done it once again. With your amazing efforts, Firefox has reached 400 million downloads and demonstrated that not even the world's most powerful companies can keep people from a better, safer, and faster Web experience. You all, the grass roots and the heart of the Firefox movement, have helped hundreds of millions of people find that better, safer, and faster Web.

Firefox 3 gets full-page zoom

The much-anticipated page zoom feature has finally landed in Firefox 3 nightly builds. Firefox 3 will now be able to zoom the entire page, including images as well as text, just like Opera and IE 7.

The page zoom feature request was originally filed in Bugzilla in 1999, but implementation was delayed because it wasn't considered practical in Gecko 1.8, the current version of Firefox's HTML rendering engine. Scheduled for inclusion in Firefox 3, the new version of the rendering engine—Gecko 1.9—leverages the open source Cairo vector graphics rendering framework and includes a number of extremely significant improvements to layout and rendering. The page zoom feature was implemented as part of the Gecko overhaul and will now be included in Firefox 3.

Although the page zoom feature is fully implemented, the user interface doesn't expose the page zoom functionality to the end user yet. Until menu items, toolbar buttons, or keyboard shortcuts are added to facilitate access to the page zoom functionality, most users probably won't be able to make much use of the new feature.

In order to test it ourselves with the latest nightly build, we poked around and figured out the underlying API so that we could alter the page zoom level with Javascript. Manipulating the page zoom requires high security access, so you can't do it directly in a web page or with a JavaScript bookmarklet. You could potentially implement support for controlling page zoom by making a custom Firefox plugin, but for simple testing purposes you can also just use Firefox's built-in JavaScript error console.

Launch the Javascript console by selecting Error Console from Firefox's Tools menu. Then, type the following into the code text box and click the Evaluate button:

Components.classes["@mozilla.org/appshell/window-mediator;1"].getService(Components.interfaces.nsIWindowMediator).getMostRecentWindow("navigator:browser").getBrowser().mCurrentBrowser.markupDocumentViewer.fullZoom = 3;

That will zoom in the current page to three times its normal size. You can experiment with various values to see the page at different zoom levels. If you want to zoom out, use decimals like 0.2 or 0.6. This very useful feature is yet another example of Firefox 3 improvements made possible by the excellent work that has gone into Gecko 1.9.

Top 10 Ways Best Ways to Manage Firefox Tabs

The ability to use tabs for web browsing was one of the key reasons why I switched over from Internet Explorer 6 to Firefox all those years ago.

Now that IE7 has come along and has incorporated tabs in their own browser as well, does it make Firefox any less appealing? Not with amount of development which has taken place with the tabs function. Here are some prime examples:

1. Color tabs to make them more distinct

chromatabs

The ‘Chromatabs‘ Firefox extension tints browser tabs with a color specific to the website loaded. This helps you identify tab contents based on a distinct visual cue. It can pick a random color automatically (based on the site’s hostname), or it can pick a color based on the site’s tab icon.

2. Group tabs automatically

With the ‘Separate Tabs‘ extension, tabs can be grouped automatically by host URL making the arrangement of tabs much more logical.

3. Preview all tabs at once

showcase

Showcase provides a new way to manage your Firefox tabs and windows by showing them as thumbnails in a single window, tab or sidebar. Includes a find bar that will filter the thumbnails, and the capability to select the thumbnails in the same way you would select files in your system.

4. Preview tabs as you mouse over

tabscope

While the ‘Showcase’ extension described above is useful, Tab Scope provides a much more subtle approach to the situation, displaying tab previews only when the mouse is moved over the tab. Don’t be fooled though, it even allows interaction navigation within that preview itself.

5. Share your tabs to a friend via email

The ‘Send Tab URLs’ extension adds a File menu command to the main browser window; when choosing this command, a new email message is automatically created, containing a list of URLs from all browser tabs in the current window.

6. Enhance your tabbing options with Tab Mix Plus

‘Tab Mix Plus‘ enhances Firefox’s tab browsing capabilities. It includes such features as duplicating tabs, controlling tab focus, tab clicking options, undo closed tabs and windows, plus much more. It also includes a full-featured session manager with crash recovery that can save and restore combinations of opened tabs and windows.

7. Save space to view more tabs in a single screen

favourite

This extension adds a new ‘FaviconizeTab’ option to the context menu of the tab. When it is clicked, The width of the tab becomes small up to the size of favicon. It returns to the former size when ‘FaviconizeTab’ is clicked again.

8. Count the number of tabs you have open

‘Tab Counter‘ is a simple extension that counts the number of open tabs per window and displays the count in the toolbar. Mainly for fun or you need an indication of how much system resources you are clogging up by having that many tabs open at once.

9. Identify unused tabs

aging

If you have too many tabs open and need help identifying the tabs which you are probably no longer using, the ‘Aging Tabs‘ extension makes unused tabs fade with age. This highlights potential tabs which may be just adding to clutter.

10. Control Tabs With Your Keyboard

Firefox makes mouse-less browsing a breeze with these simple shortcuts:

  • Ctrl T will open a new tab
  • Ctrl shift T will undo closed tab
  • Ctrl Page Up and Ctrl Page Down will scroll through your tabs
  • Ctrl Number will bring you instantly to a certain tab. eg. If you hit Ctrl and ?3? you will go to the third tab
  • Ctrl D will bookmark the current tab
  • Ctrl Shift D will bookmark all the tabs in the window

Bonus Tip #1: You can move Firefox browser tabs from one window to another by dragging and dropping it.

Bonus Tip #2: Disable tab scrolling : Although it does make tabs slightly easier to read on occasion, scrolling through tabs is a hassle. The How-To-Geek blog goes through two useful ways to work around this scrolling feature.

Firefox 3 - features preview

Firefox 3 - features preview
Posted on June 3, 2007 - Filed Under Software |

We’re all waiting for the new Firefox 3 to be released ( and that would be somewhere later this year, see the schedule for more details ). But until then let’s see some of the features that would be available in the new release.

Malware protection

* By working together with Google the Firefox browser will be able to prevent you from entering sites that will potentially harm your computer. This will work in a similar way to how Firefox prevents you now from entering sites that could steal your personal information.

Location bar changes

* The way URLs are displayed in the address bar might change, the favicon for example might not be displayed at all. Other visual changes might be made as well, such as all text besides the main domain name (as in subdomain.domain.com/page.htm) to be grayed out.

Places

* This is supposed to be the new bookmarks and tagging system. The innovation lays in the way you can organize saved sites by using the above mentioned bookmarks or tags, and even store page visiting history for each site.

Private Browsing

* This one is expected by many of the people I know for a long, long time. When in Private mode the Firefox browser will not store any information of your browsing session ( that includes history, cookies, etc).

Coming soon

* There are other features on the developers map that were not detailed enough at this time but are most likely be part of Firefox 3. Here are some of them:
o Offline Web applications
o Improved password manager
o Microformat detection
